Questions about this tool

How does this tool work: Calculate file checksum?

Free, no sign-up, right in your browser. Select a file and algorithm. Optionally paste the expected hash. Calculate and review the match result.

What does a matching checksum prove?

It shows that the calculated hash matches the entered reference. The tool does not verify whether that reference is trustworthy. Names and dates do not affect the hash; file bytes do.

What inputs, outputs and limits apply?

Input: Any file and an optional expected hexadecimal checksum. Output: File hash, algorithm, file size and optional match result. Limits: Max. 50 MB. Requires HTTPS or localhost and Web Crypto. The file is read fully into memory. Matching checksums do not replace malware scanning or a trusted source.
